SocRoc Soccer Classes

*This is a sponsored post on behalf of SocRoc written by me. Opinions are 100% Mine

I’m excited to announce that SocRoc Soccer has joined the Inclusion Revolution with Adaptive Soccer Classes. That’s right. NYC’s number 1 Soccer Program now offers specialized classes for members of the disability community. Here’s the scoop or as I like to say “Here’s the Disabili-tea”.

You might remember that time I was on the cover of a magazine? No? As a matter of fact, it’s true. In April of 2022, I was the Cover Star in Sutton Place Social’s local neighborhood magazine. Well, coincidentally SocRoc Soccer who advertises in that mag, read my story and came to the event we had to raise Autism Awareness. In the midst of us raising funds for charity, Heather Christie, CEO came up to me and introduced herself. Of course, my face lit up when she asked if she could enlist my help with catering to those kids who have a disability. After that, I had a phone call set with Heather’s brother former soccer professional, James Christie in no time.

At this point, I learned James already has some experience in working with patrons at SNACK *. Therefore I know you are in good hands. You know Snack*, I have talked about them before. They provide after-school and weekend activities for all abilities as well-but first let’s talk some more SocRoc Soccer.

With SocRoc you will be in a 2 :1 ratio with a certified Special Olympics Developmental Coach. Fantastic, right ?! No worrying that the coach is not trained in working with those with disabilities. SocRoc will cater your lesson to your ability. It doesn’t get better than that unless you choose to do a private session, which is also available. Oh and I almost forgot SocRoc does Birthday Parties ! In short-there is a reason why they get voted number one year after year. Go see for yourself and I do hope you’ll let me know how it goes. Get Kicking and click the link below.

NYC Ballet-Lincoln Center-Upper West Side

access ballet workshops nyc ballet

Hello, I believe I hear a cute little tutu calling your name? The NYC Ballet has Access to Ballet Workshops for people with disabilities. Something tells me you can do a fabulous “pirouette”. Pronounced peer-ohh-wet that’s the classical ballet term meaning spin. Did you know there is such a thing as a supported pirouette? You know we in the Special Needs community love our supports and that’s exactly what it is. A partner helps steady you during a turn and it can be done slowly instead of a normal quick pirouette. Perhaps “balloon” is more your speed ? which means to bounce. As can be seen on their website, The NYC Ballet also offers varying Adaptive Dance Classes for those with Autism or Physical Disabilities.

One thing is for certain, whatever your skill level an NYCB professional dancer will be there to help you along the way. The Access Ballet Workshops are a way for you to mingle with live NYC ballerinas. Learn more French and Italian terms like the ones I have mentioned here. And most importantly experience the beauty of an artistic expression that has been around for centuries.

Leap on over to their website to learn more. By the way at the present time, these classes are FREE! So give it a Go. Your siblings can even participate with you. Rather call to find out more details? Here is the number David H. Koch Theater Call Center at 212-496-0600 Tuesday – Saturday, 12 – 7 PM.

Sloomoo Institute- Soho Manhattan

Slime Classes Manhattan

You can take DIY Slime Classes in Manhattan. Yes, I know you’ve probably already made slime before at home. But this place specializes in nothing but our favorite sensory-friendly ooey-gooey GOOP! The Sloomoo Institute has experts that are trained in absolute slime perfection. Picture this as a whole playground for you and your friends filled with slime. What a location to have your birthday party? Am I right?! All ages are welcome and it’s ADA handicap accessible. Everyone can come and have their artsy imaginations run wild while also celebrating YOU! Lots of ideas to make the day awesome. Maybe take a tour, go to the DIY bar and create your own concoction, or even rent the whole joint out if you’d rather? I’m certain Sloomoo will be happy to help get this party plan started. You know what I’m saying. They are there for you just like I am!

Not into crowds or parties ? That’s totally ok. Private Zoom slime-making classes are also available at this Manhattan pop-up location. Do you know what pop-up means? It stands for temporary. I don’t know about you but I’d love to see them change that to a permanent location. With your business and me spreading the word hopefully, we can get them to stay in NYC forever.

In any event, you have to go check this sensory wonderland out soon. Sloomoo has lots of wet, sticky, and smooth experiences waiting for you to sink your fingers into. By all means, click on the website below and see how easy it is to sign up for afterschool/weekend classes. Also, be sure to purchase tickets online when you want to go to the institute in person. They highly recommend this because they could sell out, and then you’ve made the trip for nothing.

On the bright side, all would not be lost because you can always look inside their gift shop which is loaded with slime to go, squishy pens, and many other spectacular gift items. I can hardly wait to hear how much you enjoy Sloomoo Institute. You know where to find me-@specialneedsnyc2020 on Instagram of course.

Center for All Abilities- Chinatown

Family Support-Center for All Abilities

Do you think it would be FUN to go with other families like yours on a Family Outing? Yeah, Me too! The Center for All Abilities offers Family Support for those with a member who has a disability. Everything you could’ve ever dreamed of is housed within this one organization.

First, let me begin with the youth mentorship program. Adults lead Christian Based discussions on virtues and character-building behaviors. These can be done as a group or one-on-one. Guidance to lead us on the right path to a quality life is always good. Am I right?

Of course, the Center for All Abilities also offers therapeutic art and music programs. The beauty of both of these is that a certified trained therapist will meet you at your level of expertise. No pressure or need to worry if you don’t feel you’re that creative. They are there to help. No judgments just good times.

Ultimately the center hopes you’ll choose to become part of their family support programs for those with all sorts of disabilities. I say this because I saved the best for last. They have an Annual Achievement Ceremony! You know the one with the awards and you are beaming all day. That’s right. Every single year they like to celebrate what you and your new friends have accomplished throughout the programs.

The Jewish Museum – Upper East Side

Accessible Jewish Programs

Have you tried out the Accessible Jewish Programs at Manhattan’s Jewish Museum yet? Did you know that they were the first Jewish museum in the entire United States? The museum is lucky enough to be housed in the original family mansion of Felix and Frieda Warburg. They were two Jewish philanthropists back in the early 1900s. When I hear the word “mansion” I instantly take that as a signal that it’s large and gorgeous. Well, the museum doesn’t disappoint. As you can imagine it was immaculately decorated way back then and most of those ornate details remain preserved today.

Because the museum is home to a large collection of Jewish art and culture a planned visit can be quite interesting. Not to mention they provide FREE private access tours for you and your family. Of course, you need to give two weeks’ notice for this to happen, but I’m certain you can handle arranging the details. They require this notice to be able to set up any accommodations you may need. The Jewish museum educators are happy to provide audio guides that give verbal descriptions of the exhibitions, supply ASL interpreters, and even allow service dogs to join in on the experience. All you need to do is either call or email the access department( access@thejm.org or 212.423.3289) and you’ll be on your way.

The whole family can participate in art programs designed with individuals with disabilities in mind. When you look at the accessible Jewish programs section of their webpage you’ll see where you can subscribe to receive updates and access events. Probably a good idea. Don’t you think?

YAI Network- Midtown East Headquarters &Various other locations

Manhattan Disability Services-YAI Network

Hey Manhattan Friends, did you know there is an amazing place in town called the YAI Network? No? Me either! I’m so glad I stumbled across them in an Accessibility Meeting one afternoon. YAI specializes in Disability Services for all five boroughs of Manhattan. YAI stands for the Young Adult Institute. Given the fact that their motto is “seeing beyond disability,” I think they might be after my heart! Once I started looking at their website I knew that I must tell you guys about them straightaway.

To begin with, YAI was founded back in 1957 at a small school in Brooklyn. Back then there were only 7 participants now the institute has expanded greatly and has served over 20,000 people with disabilities. Not to mention they have nearly 4000 employees ready to supply the stepping stones for your launch into an independent life. How’s that for a supportive environment?

YAI believes you have the right to live, love, work and learn in our communities just like everyone else. That being said their institute offers a plethora of day and evening programs for those with disabilities. For example, the YAI arts studio on Tuesday nights gives you a chance to flex your creative muscles. In order to help those with Autism brush up on their social skills, there are Social Club meetings. You and I Social Networking is another way to practice engaging with others. By and large, YAI strives to assist you in navigating your own life choices; therefore, they offer Supportive Job Training and Residential Housing Services as well.

https://www.yai.org/locations/manhattan

Although there might seem a lot of information to take in when visiting their website, YAI has a number to call 212.273.6100. Additionally, there are lots of Youtube videos on the site to help explain how enrollment works into the programs. Support is there when you’re ready. YAI Network will make your dreams come true with their Manhattan Disability Services. You’ll be ready to FLY in no time.

Heidi Latsky Dance-Midtown

Accessible Dance Classes Manhattan

Accessible Dance Classes are smack dab in the middle of Manhattan at Heidi Latsky Dance Studio. Thank Goodness I found Heidi’s amazing company on instagram one day. I’m so excited to tell you all about them. To begin with they are Female Run Organization thus, reminding you girls and women that you don’t need to be a man to own or run your business.

Anyway back to HLD’s beginnings. Since 2001, Heidi Latsky has been dedicated to illuminating diversity through the power of performance art. She was successfully trucking along building her business. Then comes 2006 when she asked to choreograph a piece for the disabled dancer Lisa Bufano. With the success of the piece, Latsky’s underlying intention for her performance art studio changed. Suddenly her desire to make dance choreography more inclusive, diverse, and unconventional became a true passion for her life. So much so that she created The GIMP Project, which lasted 10 whole years traveling the world. Disability activists help guide her and before you know it a disability dance culture was born. What a story, right? You see what happens when you follow your passion!

The best part is Heidi Latsky Dance is still going strong. At the present time, she has an art project called On Display. The installation is at many selected venues around the city. Heidi Latsky has accomplished so much and I’m thrilled to have someone like her here on this Earth.

Go ahead join her mailing list and reach out to the studio so you can find out when the next performances, panel discussions, lectures, dance classes, workshops, and community engagement sessions are happening.

Accessible Dance Classes in Manhattan are waiting for you – get to it!

Birch Family Sevices-Chelsea

disability family services manhattan

Disability Family Services in Manhattan are provided by several organizations. One of which is the long-standing organization, Birch Family Services. Before you were even born Birch Family Services was busy empowering and supporting families who have a member with a disability. Not only that they are there from the onset of diagnosis in early childhood all the way through to age 21. At the present time, I’m only going to talk about their New Frontier and Life Skills Programs.

Eventually, there will come a time when you want to learn skills to be part of the workforce here in good old U S of A. Preparation begins long before that first interview with taking courses at Birch and being a part of their community habilitation sessions. Their New Frontier Program gives you the tools to get hired and stay employed for many years to come.

To take things a step further Birch Family Services has residential services that start at age 18. Can you imagine it? Working and living in a safe place that has adult supervision at all times if you need it. Wow! You better not forget about me when your off living your best life. You know I’m just kidding. I wish you nothing but the best in all you do! The moral of the story is that there is a whole host of people ready to assist you once you’re ready to get out there on your own.

Downtown Little League- Battery Park City

special needs baseball downtown

The Downtown Little League gives Players with Disabilities the chance to play Baseball in their Challenger Division. During the season Saturday mornings at Battery Park City Fields are full of various individuals with disabilities. Rather than being concerned with skill level, The Challenger Division of NYC’s little league focuses on having a good time. Enthusiasm is the only requirement in these games. NYU volunteers, fellow players, coaches, and parents all are there to assist in learning different aspects of baseball. Just being a member of a team is really something that feels good. Even if you don’t want to learn how to hit you could always be the ball boy or girl and help around the field giving players water. Maybe you could even be the runner for someone else.

No matter what Baseball is a fun sport for those with Special Needs to participate in while living Downtown. The season only lasts a few months anyway, so why not try it? Oh, and in case you are wondering- Downtown is considered the area below or south of Canal Street in Manhattan. If you are unsure I bet if you call them they can help direct you.

Please don’t forget to sing a few verses of “take me out to the ball game” when you go. Such a great tune!
