Carmine’s -Upper West Side
So there’s a rumor that Garfield once flew to NYC from Indiana just to have an Italian Birthday Dinner with Jon and Odie in the early ’90s. Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me because we all know how much Garfield loves lasagna. Unfortunately, I never heard where the group dined but Carmine’s Italian Restaurant would be where I would bet.
Carmine’s has been around a long time. Since 1990 in fact. That’s certainly no easy feat here in NYC. There are two locations-one in Times Square and one on the Upper West Side. I am choosing to only recommend the Upper West Side because it is not nearly as loud as the Times Square location. I also have personal experience in having a 14-year-old’s Italian Birthday Dinner Celebration at the UWS restaurant.
To begin with, the teens had their own table and the family-style Italian dining was a hit. I chose to sit at another table and observe from afar so the kids could have some independence. Because I had planned with the restaurant beforehand the waitstaff took special care in making sure the kids felt empowered during their dining experience. Markedly, there is a nice clean, friendly, old-school ambiance to Carmines. Definitely, a place that Kids and adults can talk and hear each other with no problem. Sometimes that’s hard to find nowadays.
Additionally, we had a teen in a wheelchair attend and it was a plus that all dining areas were wheelchair accessible. The birthday dessert was huge and made quite the impression on the table because of its magnitude and glorious presentation. All in all Carmine’s Italian Restaurant is a great place to go for a family celebration of any kind or just a random Tuesday. Private rooms are available and they have a very descriptive website that you can check out below. By the way, The Times Square Location may be just as wonderful. I am only going off my experience. Divertiti, Arrivederci!

Buffalo Wild Wings- Times Square -Theater District
How about a Birthday Party in Times Square? Buffalo Wild Wings will be happy to host your shindig. Obviously everyone loves Chicken Wings and BWW has some of the best ones out there. Not to mention all the varieties of flavors and sauces they offer.
We really enjoy this location for several reasons. First, it’s a good size for a NY restaurant. It has a nice large room in the back that you can request to be seated in or even have your birthday celebration. The area is open and people can see inside but it’s still separated. There is plenty of room for a decent size group and space for kids to move freely. Clean and Friendly Staff. There are several TV’s high above that will keep kids engaged if that is important to you.
In addition, the entire restaurant is wheelchair accessible and not too loud. Given that I took two tween boys with Autism and they loved every minute. Furthermore, We ended up ordering a second round of wings for all of us. They are that good. Now for my favorite part. Their Blazin Rewards program will give you an order of FREE wings every year for your Birthday! Not only that if you get the APP on your phone you can play games, order online, and earn points. Of course, you get even more points every time you dine in. Easily sign up by providing your phone number in the APP. Although they ask for the number, they are not going to call you. It’s just an easy way for them to keep track of your points.
All things considered, if you’re trying to decide where to have your Birthday Party in Times Square, BWW fits the bill. Especially if you are a tween, teen, or young adult. Also, a great place to have a bite before or after a Broadway Show.
By the way, if someone is not a fan of wings, they have other menu options. If you want to check out their rewards program just click below.
Whenever you tell them what teams you root for you get an additional 50 pts. immediately!
Oh and I’ll take an extra side of ranch sauce, please.

The Healing Powers of Dude
Netflix has stepped up to the plate and given us a new series about an 11-year-old with “social anxiety disorder” who has an emotional support dog. The Healing Powers of Dude is the latest addition to a line of entertainment projects featuring individuals with a disability. The first episode premiered in January of 2020, so you can quickly binge-watch to catch up in no time.
The premise is you get to follow Noah as he deals with his social issues through Middle School. Along the way is his therapy dog, Dude. Going to Middle School is kind of a big deal on its own. But coupled with the fact that Noah was previously homeschooled the transition is a little bit of a struggle. However, this series is a comedy so we can laugh about some of the relatable situations.
Season 2 is in the for works for January of 2021. If we don’t watch there will NOT be another season. Please let friends know about The Healing Powers of Dude with the link below so we can keep this awesome show on the air that deals with lots of different relevant issues in today’s society.

Disability Awareness Month-Make it Happen.
Disability Awareness Month- Make it Happen
Wonder by RJ Palacio
We cannot talk about Disability Awareness Month without talking about the book Wonder by RJ Palacio. First, did you know that RJ stands for Raquel Jaramillo? Second, I would like to point out that the book is based on a real experience RJ had while with her son. While out and about her son noticed someone with a facial deformity and began to cry. As a result, RJ decided to use this moment as a valuable lesson in her life. She decided to write a book to help spread the word about Disability Awareness. Wonder was published in 2012. The inspiration for the title of the book came from Natalie Merchant’s song by the same name- Wonder. If you would like to hear the song I have linked it here along with lyrics. Be sure to subscribe to my channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v611MlWMtL8&list=PLxL_KHZAzNkhFxrOPmgoQKrx-v2lepATz&index=3 .
Consequently, Wonder has been a wild success and won countless awards because of its raw look at what it feels like to be different. Kids everywhere can relate and cherish the story of August “Auggie” Pullman. Whether it is for Disability Awareness Month or not the book deserves a read by everyone in my humble opinion. For this reason, you won’t even need to buy the book. I have provided a link to a FREE download down below. Because the book was such a hit Wonder the movie(rated PG) was also released as a motion picture in 2017. Another FREE watch link below. Ultimately, I am thankful for movies like this that exist to bring Disability Awareness to the forefront right where it should be. You can also follow this link to other movies and film festivals I adore. https://thedisabilityallynyc.com/category/entertainment/movies/

Has Your School Ever…….
Has your school or workplace ever had a Disability Awareness Day? Gosh, I hope so. They can be very informative and fun. In the event that you would like to initiate one, I have several Disability Awareness FREE Resources right below this article. You can instantly print all the tools you need and make it happen!
During my Special Needs Teacher tenure back in Galveston, Texas, I put on the first-ever Disability Awareness Day at my school. Surprisingly, it was 2012 and no one in the school district had ever done that before. Under those circumstances, I knew it was time for a change. The event was a huge success and paved the way for more inclusion opportunities.
It’s important to realize that through no fault of their own many people are uneducated when it comes to disabilities. For this reason, it is vital to spread awareness about what it means to live Autism, Blindness, Down Syndrome, or any other cognitive/physical impairments.
I can’t emphasize enough that having a Disability Awareness Day/Week/Month is some of the most life-changing work you’ll ever do for others. Even if you go to a Special Needs School, having an Awareness for what your friends go through each day will help make for a more compassionate learning environment. The more we know the more we can help and understand one another.
Honestly, you can make it last a whole month. Show specific movies each week. Make announcements on the loudspeaker about famous people with disabilities each day. You name it. It’s all good. Just do it.
Since the Disability Awareness resources are FREE and downloadable you can get the ball rolling in no time. As a side note- Generally, Disability Awareness Month is in April but you can celebrate it whenever you think it works best. That part doesn’t matter one bit. Change starts with YOU and a quick click. PS. We Love You, Indiana!

Lincoln Center-Passport to the Arts-Upper West Side
First, let me start by saying The Lincoln Center has done an amazing job with regard to performing arts accessibility. For one thing, the entire center is accessible to individuals in wheelchairs including reserved seats.
Next, they have forged a unique program called Passport to the Arts. Children with disabilities along with their families can enjoy an introduction to the arts through a variety of Lincoln Center performances.
In the hope that more families can be exposed to the arts, the center has made tickets available at NO-COST. WOW! How nice of them. In order for you to get a lay of the land before you come, the Center also offers a FREE guided tour of the facilities.
There is only one crucial thing to remember. Due to Policy, You Must Give Advance Notice of at least Two Weeks. I would imagine tickets are also subject to availability. Please contact 212-875-5375 to arrange your experience whenever you know the date of your attendance.
Hats off to the Lincoln Center for showing inclusive support to our community. Performing Arts Accessibility is something we are very grateful for in New York. Further accommodations can be had with a click down below.
