Best Buddies NYC

making friends special needs

Making friends for Special Needs children starts to get a little harder as clicks begin to form in school. From that moment on through adulthood making new connections can be quite challenging. Lucky for Us, Anthony Shriver started the Best Buddies Program back in 1989 to solve this problem. Since that time the program has grown to have chapters all over the world in over 50 countries.

In accordance with its mission, the program was built on four pillars.

1)foster meaningful one on one friendships 2)integrated employment 3)leadership development 4) inclusive living

for people who have IDD(intellectual and developmental disabilities) such as Down Syndrome, Autism, and Fragile X. Consequently, Best Buddies has made huge strides in the area of inclusion across the globe.

Likewise, I am happy to say that we have a chapter in our area to assist our Special Needs NYC Community in making friends/connections to improve our lives. Best Buddies NYC is located in Midtown at the Kinglman & Associates Office. Phone is 212-220-8552.

Whenever you read about the Friendship Ball, Walk, Concert, Leadership Conference and Fashion Show they have every year you’ll want to become a Best Buddy immediately! There is lots of Celebrity Involvement at these events so I’m guessing that you’ll be able to meet one and strike a pose for a selfie. Need I say more? Call the number without delay and sign up.

special needs nyc sparkidz

Sparkidz is a Special Needs Social-Recreational Program.   Classes are held on Saturdays from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm during the months of September through June. Although activities take place at The Trevor School you do not need to be enrolled there to attend.

Uniquely Art, Music, Theater, Dance, Sports, and Cooking are all offered at the one location.   Our favorite subjects under one roof.  It doesn’t get better than this.  Oh my, maybe it does?  From time to time they even take Field Trips.  Score!

If I know you, you are probably thinking you might have something else on Saturdays? Despite their sadness, Sparkidz Program understands.  Flexibility is yet another positive to the network of trained teachers.  Want to take one class or do a half-day? Sure, No problem with both.  Suppose you want the whole enchilada? I like your style. FOMO(fear of missing out) is never fun. In that case,  signup for a Full Day.  Ages 6 on up to 25.    Sparkidz is also supervised with a 3: 1  student-teacher ratio thus able to give you extra help if you need it.

Central Park Carousel- Upper East Side

special needs nyc central park carousel

When is the last time you guys went to Central Park and rode the carousel? We are so fortunate to have this timeless attraction here in the middle of the city. The kids never tire of the amusement of circling around on a beautifully painted horse. Central Park is such a wonderfully inclusive environment. Why not have a birthday party there and the kids can ride the carousel as one of the activities? In that case, kids can spread out and just be kids. With plenty of room to play games and act silly everyone enjoys themselves in a relaxed way. Later tie a pinata on a tree. Suddenly you’ve got yourself a party.

If you want more action the possibilities are endless. For instance, you bring motorized boats for the kids to drive in the pond, do group carriage rides, go to the zoo, have a scavenger hunt, or make simple crafts. None of that sound appealing? There are lovely playgrounds throughout the park. Also nearby are baseball fields where you can play an adaptive ball game. Instead of these elaborate parties sometimes it’s nice to get back to basics and utilize this giant backyard! When friends or family are visiting NYC, Central Park Carousel should be near the top of the list. Slow down take in some nature and click below…

The Care and Keeping of YOU-American Girl Series

puberty for girls special needs nyc

Puberty for girls can be a challenging time. Throwing in having special needs adds a whole other layer of challenges. For this reason, in comes The Care and Keeping of You Books come to the rescue. First, let me tell you that Vol.1 demonstrates the importance of taking care of yourself by showering, hair brushing, etc. Second, the book answers any questions you have about what it means to be a girl. For example, what changes to expect in your body as you start to go through puberty. Clearly stressing the point that this is all normal.

Though some people might argue, I believe the First Volume is best suitable for a child that is close to 9 years old. On the other hand, some girls are more mature so I will leave that up to you. With that in mind, no matter your age you might consider reading a little with your Mom/Aunt/Caregiver each day and discussing topics as you go along. The key is to make sure it’s a lady you feel comfortable with. Sometimes questions like when to start wearing a bra? what is getting your period? is difficult to talk about but this book talks about Puberty for Girls easily.

Sooner or later it’s time for Vol 2. for older girls. This is after you have read Vol 1 of course. This one dives into Puberty for Girls on a much deeper level. Usually around 12 or so would be a good time for this volume. Again, this is just my opinion. At this time you might be dealing with new emotions you may have not felt before and starting to see some obvious physical changes in your body.

Once you read these you most likely will be hooked on the American Girl Series. All of the covers on our books are nearly completely worn off. The books make great gifts for friends. With topics like Money, Cooking, and Friendships there is truly something to help you with any area of your life. Hence, guiding you towards becoming a more independent adult. You Go Girl!

Books-The Law of Attraction for Kids by Jennifer Quaggin

positive start to the day special needs nyc

Want a Positive Start to the Day? The Law Attraction for Kids is a scientifically proven way to accomplish Big Things. Whenever you incorporate these positive vibes into your morning routine you are making a choice. A decision as to what kind of day you want to have. In short, The basis of the Law of Attraction is- What you think is going to happen will happen.

Your thoughts are very powerful. That being said, if you have a positive start to the day and keep your thoughts focused on those then most likely it will be a Great Day. In contrast, if you are negative with a bad attitude then guess what? Bad Day. Good news though. You can instantly train your mind to get back on track when you’re ready. Have you ever had someone tell you “turn that frown upside down”? Kind of annoying, I know but there is truth to that statement. When you shift from being sad to happy in your mind magical things can take place.

Also worth mentioning, the Law of Attraction mantras are a nice way to curb your WORRIES. Especially before you go to sleep at night. In summary, don’t let those pestering negative thoughts get in your way of doing anything. Why not start and end the day with this book? See for yourself. It works.

Have I ever steered you wrong? Heck No.

Books-The Night I Followed The Dog-Nina Laden

special needs nyc books

What do you think the family dog does when ya’ll go to sleep? That’s for me to know and you to find out. Sorry. You won’t get spoiler alerts here.

To begin with, The Night I Followed the Dog by Nina Laden immediately became one of my favorite children’s books right when I finished it. Particularly because I grew up with my family always having pets. Lots of them actually. Cats, dogs, birds, and even a hamster. I’ll tell you more about them another time. To explain further would take up the whole page. For right now, let’s just focus on one.

As long as I can remember the family dog just hung out with us most of the time. It never crossed my mind that he may have had another life. A life I knew nothing about until I read this book. Boy, was I clueless! This is just one night. Who knows what else goes on?

Together with other family members, you will laugh and think,,, maybe we don’t know our dog at all? Certainly a great gift for other families and friends that also have a dog. Quick and easy read with amusing

illustrations. Appropriate for all ages.

Here you can get your very own copy to treasure! https://amzn.to/3Bd6epk By the way Nina Laden, the author is one cool lady I follow on Instagram. She’s always cooking something straight from her garden which is so dang cool.

NYC- Basic Tips and Etiquette by Nathan Pyle

special needs nyc books

Before I moved from Texas to NYC in 2015 I came across this Travel Guide-NYC-Basic Tips and Etiquette by Nathan Pyle. Certainly, the most valuable and funniest etiquette book I’ve ever read. Pyle shares timeless tips and wit that only true New Yorkers would understand. No matter how long you have lived here I guarantee you’ll get a kick out of this guide to New York manners.

In contrast to other guide books, this one is filled with lots of picture drawings rather than long dull dialogue. Every child that has read the NYC-Basics along with me over the years has enjoyed role-playing the various NY situations. Laughs always ensue, and before they know it they have learned some “New York” manners that they will never forget. Who knew there was a correct way to order a sandwich, walk on the sidewalk, and ask for directions?

In my experience, NYC Basic Tips and Etiquette is generally excellent for kids Aged 9 up to 99. It also makes an ideal gift for friends and family that will be coming to visit. Read more about this Travel Guide right down below.
