The Jewish Museum – Upper East Side

Accessible Jewish Programs

Have you tried out the Accessible Jewish Programs at Manhattan’s Jewish Museum yet? Did you know that they were the first Jewish museum in the entire United States? The museum is lucky enough to be housed in the original family mansion of Felix and Frieda Warburg. They were two Jewish philanthropists back in the early 1900s. When I hear the word “mansion” I instantly take that as a signal that it’s large and gorgeous. Well, the museum doesn’t disappoint. As you can imagine it was immaculately decorated way back then and most of those ornate details remain preserved today.

Because the museum is home to a large collection of Jewish art and culture a planned visit can be quite interesting. Not to mention they provide FREE private access tours for you and your family. Of course, you need to give two weeks’ notice for this to happen, but I’m certain you can handle arranging the details. They require this notice to be able to set up any accommodations you may need. The Jewish museum educators are happy to provide audio guides that give verbal descriptions of the exhibitions, supply ASL interpreters, and even allow service dogs to join in on the experience. All you need to do is either call or email the access department( access@thejm.org or 212.423.3289) and you’ll be on your way.

The whole family can participate in art programs designed with individuals with disabilities in mind. When you look at the accessible Jewish programs section of their webpage you’ll see where you can subscribe to receive updates and access events. Probably a good idea. Don’t you think?
