NYC Ballet-Lincoln Center-Upper West Side

access ballet workshops nyc ballet

Hello, I believe I hear a cute little tutu calling your name? The NYC Ballet has Access to Ballet Workshops for people with disabilities. Something tells me you can do a fabulous “pirouette”. Pronounced peer-ohh-wet that’s the classical ballet term meaning spin. Did you know there is such a thing as a supported pirouette? You know we in the Special Needs community love our supports and that’s exactly what it is. A partner helps steady you during a turn and it can be done slowly instead of a normal quick pirouette. Perhaps “balloon” is more your speed ? which means to bounce. As can be seen on their website, The NYC Ballet also offers varying Adaptive Dance Classes for those with Autism or Physical Disabilities.

One thing is for certain, whatever your skill level an NYCB professional dancer will be there to help you along the way. The Access Ballet Workshops are a way for you to mingle with live NYC ballerinas. Learn more French and Italian terms like the ones I have mentioned here. And most importantly experience the beauty of an artistic expression that has been around for centuries.

Leap on over to their website to learn more. By the way at the present time, these classes are FREE! So give it a Go. Your siblings can even participate with you. Rather call to find out more details? Here is the number David H. Koch Theater Call Center at 212-496-0600 Tuesday – Saturday, 12 – 7 PM.

Heidi Latsky Dance-Midtown

Accessible Dance Classes Manhattan

Accessible Dance Classes are smack dab in the middle of Manhattan at Heidi Latsky Dance Studio. Thank Goodness I found Heidi’s amazing company on instagram one day. I’m so excited to tell you all about them. To begin with they are Female Run Organization thus, reminding you girls and women that you don’t need to be a man to own or run your business.

Anyway back to HLD’s beginnings. Since 2001, Heidi Latsky has been dedicated to illuminating diversity through the power of performance art. She was successfully trucking along building her business. Then comes 2006 when she asked to choreograph a piece for the disabled dancer Lisa Bufano. With the success of the piece, Latsky’s underlying intention for her performance art studio changed. Suddenly her desire to make dance choreography more inclusive, diverse, and unconventional became a true passion for her life. So much so that she created The GIMP Project, which lasted 10 whole years traveling the world. Disability activists help guide her and before you know it a disability dance culture was born. What a story, right? You see what happens when you follow your passion!

The best part is Heidi Latsky Dance is still going strong. At the present time, she has an art project called On Display. The installation is at many selected venues around the city. Heidi Latsky has accomplished so much and I’m thrilled to have someone like her here on this Earth.

Go ahead join her mailing list and reach out to the studio so you can find out when the next performances, panel discussions, lectures, dance classes, workshops, and community engagement sessions are happening.

SND’s Everyone Dance Program-Harlem

adult adaptive dance class

I like to Move It. Move It. I like to Move it. Move it. Listen I know how it is. When you get older you just want to relax. The thing is that’s not good for your body. You need to keep it moving. Why not have some fun while you’re doing it in an Adult Adaptive Dance Class? Consequently, We have one nearby in Harlem with your name on it.

The Everyone (last time I checked, everyone means YOU) Dance Program is the Adult Adaptive Dance Class you Want with the movement you Need!

Everyone Dance has been made possible through a collaboration with AHRC NYC and the Stephanie Nelson Dance (SND) Studio. Both programs saw a gap that needed to be filled. Disability Dance classes for Adults are usually few and far between. In general, a dance company’s special needs program only focuses on children. Now the tables are turned. Everyone Dance only allows Adult Dancers 18+ with various disabilities to participate. During this 10-month program creative expression flows and ends with a performance in a glamorous Arts Center in Manhattan. As is only right! How Spectacular!

The Adaptive Dance for Adults Everyone Dance program also welcomes individuals in wheelchairs. Move to the beat down below and find out all the specifics. Subscribe to their newsletter to be the first to know when to sign up.

92Y-Upper East Side

special olympics swim manhattan

You can now train for the Special Olympics Swim Team in Manhattan at the 92Y. The Flying Dolphins Team was created specifically for teens and young adults. Generally, the team trains for events by working on certain skills such as freestyle and backstroke. Being that some swimmers may not be as capable, there are also fundamental events for less advanced swimmers. For this reason, the Special Olympics ensures that opportunities are available for all abilities.

Training to participate in competitions around New York is an exciting way to get in shape while also making new friends.

Likewise, The Y also offers other aquatics, fitness, and dance classes to children with special needs. During Private coaching sessions, students can also be trained in a Fitness Program. The program, Let’s Get Movin’ is geared specifically for those with Autism.

However, the program can be adapted by the instructional coaches to teens with differing abilities besides autism. For the purpose of being inclusive to all the Y is continually increasing its offerings to the Special Needs NYC Community. Therefore, you might call to inquire about new or other existing options available. Accordingly, everyone that I’ve encountered at Manhattan 92Y has always been friendly. From the Special Olympics Swim Coach to the Phone Operator they are ready to help YOU.

Moreover, there are three elevators in the building giving all access to individuals in wheelchairs. What are you waiting for? Let’s do this.

ZCO/Dance Project- Financial District

adaptive dance zco/dance project

Adaptive Dance is something ZCO ( Zazel-Chavah O’Garra) has been passionate about for years. In light of suffering a debilitating circumstance in 2003, O’Garra was paralyzed on one side. During that time she learned adaptive dance as a way to help her cope mentally and heal her own body. After experiencing the benefits of dance first-hand in her rehabilitation she knew she must create an All-Inclusive Dance Company.

It was then that the ZCO/Dance Project was born. With her own story in mind, ZCO has made it her mission to serve those with physical and cognitive impairments. Adaptive Dance gives those individuals another way to express themselves through motion and therapeutic movement. Although some students may be wheel-chair bound, there is no stopping them from joining the class. ZCO dance primarily does Contemporary Performance routines. These routines are adjusted with supports so that all participants are engaged.

As a result, dancers at the Project gain self-confidence, independence, and a sense of accomplishment by the end of the semester. Ages 5-18. One on one or group sessions available. Time to step ball change with a click down below.

Roaring Epiphany Production Company-Midtown

Inclusive Acting Roaring Epiphany Production Company

Inclusive Acting and Audition opportunities are somewhat lacking in New York City. Honestly, let me be real. They are lacking everywhere. However, NYC is a great place to start breaking through theater barriers.

Through our good fortune, RJ VerChuad decided to take the bull by the horns to try and fill some of the gaps. Back in 2015, he founded The Roaring Epiphany Production Company, (REPC). For the sole purpose of bringing inclusion acting to the forefront, REPC began casting ADULTS with disabilities in theatrical roles.

At the present time, productions of new and old works are performed at The Playroom Theater. REPC members get the chance to work alongside Broadway and off-Broadway actors. Generally, Adults 18+ with disabilities can audition to take the stage as actors, singers, dancers, and poets just to name a few options. Individuals in wheelchairs can easily apply and audition because the Playroom Theater is accessible for ALL.

Due to Roaring Epiphany’s diligence, Inclusive Acting is here to stay in New York City. We certainly hope that other cities take notice and start their own organizations to promote actors of ALL abilities. Your Opening Night awaits. Click Below.
